前者我是比較常用.後者 有點像是在找藉口.像是忘記帶鉛筆這些的.

That he failed in the exam made his parents very disappointed. (?)
=> His failure in the exam makes his parents disappointed. (better)
=> His parents are disappointed by his failure in the exam. (best)

1. That he failed in the exam made his parents very disappointed.
a. Noun clause used as Subject of sentence:
"that he failed in the exam" is a noun clause used as subject of the sentence.
It answers the question as to "what made his parents very disappointed?"
It is the "fact" [that he failed in the exam] made his parents very disappointed.

b. Delayed subject:
The above noun clause can be placed at the end of the sentence. In this case, a dummy "it" is to be placed at beginning of the sentence referring to the actual subject.
"It" made his parents very disappointed [that he failed in the exam].
This sentence also answers the question "what...?" and is equivalent to the first sentence above.

c. Adverbial clause:
The 3rd and 4th sentences are not correct in meaning as they do not answer the question of "what ...?"; so they are not equivalent to the first sentence!
Instead of noun clause, a subordinate clause (adverbial) clause should be used to answer the question of "why...?"; such as
He made his parents very disappointed because he failed in the exam.

2. A person who is ambitious usually does well at work.
此句who is可以省略,
變成  A person ambitious usually does well at work. (X)
變成  An ambitious person usually does well at work.  (O)
