Follow PEMDAS rule. 1 × (-8) = -8
5 + -8 = -3
Answer: -3

It is a common practice to put negative number in brackets to avoid confusion.
5 + 1 × (-8)
= 5 + (-8) …… for 1 × (-8) = -8
= 5 - 8 …… for + (-8) = - 8
= -3
