They're doing remarkably well for not having shut everything down.  Still too early to say for sure, though.

It makes sense.

People make the mistake of thinking a stay at home order and shut down is the key to social distancing, when in fact many countries or states with stay at home orders allow people to leave their home every day and go to crowded places so long as it's deemed "essential". Shutting down many businesses and recreation makes no sense if I still go to a crowded grocery store every day.

Better to keep the economy going, and encourage people to practicing social distancing without the shut downs.  Asian countries have long worn masks and used other distancing techniques to limit virus spread without always shutting everything down.

I live in a state that like Sweden does not have stay at home orders, but I avoid the grocery store and other crowded venues.  We also have the lowest death rate per capita of any state.  Sweden may have a quicker spike, but in the end I bet they don't have many more deaths and don't suffer the economic consequences many other countries will.

We should also keep in mind that there are many things that kill far more people than the coronavirus, but we don't address those things in ways that create huge negative economic impacts.

wonder how many of those who assume that Sweden is doing "much better" just because they don't have Trump or our "awful systems" realize how that disconnect between assumption and reality fits in so systemically with the rest of their political leanings...

No point in shutting anything down...yet. This has serious economic impact. Then they only would have a longer depression later. And must maybe it will not hit them too hard after the rest of the world gets over it.

This is a good middle-of-the-road approach.

I'm guessing it takes people smarter than the average USAmerican to make it work

Swedes NORMALLY social distance. I did the nude beach scene there for years. In Sweden, you look out the peep hole, make sure no one is in the hall, and RUN RUN RUN to the elevator so you don't have to DEAL with other people.

Without even looking I know it's better than downplaying the dangers for SIX weeks the way Trump did.

It is smart for Sweden, not so much for many other countries.
