Where on earth do you get the completely incorrect idea that vegetarianism means that you don't get viruses??
That's totally idiotic.
Fruit bats do eat insects. They are not going to spit it out if an insect gets into their mouths while eating fruits. Insects are a good source of protein, something all animals need to survive. They can get a virus from being bitten by a mosquito (e.g. West Nile virus, Dengue fever, yellow fever) for example, or they can get it from the environment. For example, if another animal is infected and it sneezes, the virus can land on some surface that the fruit bat touches. Other fruit bats can get it the same way if the infected fruit bat sneezes.
bats have been around a long time, so they have their own strains of CoV, just as humans have their own strains of CoV.
A human CoV could kill a bat and we would call it a common cold.
You have solved the CORVID-19 Pandemic. Vegans will be jumping up and down with glee saying we told you so. So there you have it folks: Cut out all animal-derived foods and we can all get back to normal. I really don't know why we waste money on the WHO, NHS, CDC, etc. Sheesh.
Might surprise you just how rare it is to find an infected bat. A few more likely are dogs and cats, skunks, and #1 is raccoon.
Where such virus is contracted is for their social hierarchy or encounters with infected animals.
A good read about bats on batworld dot org site.
Four reasons. They are the only flying mammals and therefore put their immune systems under a lot of stress due to the energy they have to expend, leading to the need to tolerate viruses rather than get rid of them. They live in crowded conditions which encourage infection. They live longer than most mammals their size, which gives them longer to acquire infections. And finally, they are very diverse genetically and have a great number of species, which leads to the increased probability that they will have viruses simply because there are so many of them. But it isn't fruit bats so much as Microchiroptera who get viruses.
