is it offensive to tell a girl that she has gotten thinner?

basically this girl I know broke her leg and hasn't been able to move around but when I saw her (1 month later) I noticed she got thinner. I never told her that, because I didn't want to stir the pot, but would it be ok to say so?

YOU'VE LOST WEIGHT, this would be basically what you're saying to this person, give that some thought. I know your going to come up with the right answer.

I know of no woman who considers "Wow, have you been working out" an insult.
