Balanced vitamin intake is helpfull in bolstering the body's resilience.

But in itself dose not prevent infections or viruses, just makes them easier to manage for the body.

Imagine having a broad variety of specialized items (white blood cells) you can make at any time out of some raw materials (vitamins) - certain combinations are much easier to make when you have access to all the possible raw materials, else you may have to resort to closest match. To make it easier to picture:
you need to cut down some wheat but do not poses scythe, so you have to use something like axe or something, because you do not have the constituting parts of scythe.
