Is it a good idea to microwave ice cream?

I have microwaved a container of ice cream to soften it a bit so I could get it dished out, but I find once it has been microwaved, it gets really icy once it goes back in the freezer.

If it is real frozen I will microwave it for 5 to 10 seconds to soften it so I can get an ice cream scoop or spoon into it

Sure if you like it softer or even runny. I put hard butter in the microwave for a few seconds for easy spreading on my toast.
