Why did humans come up with the idea of excluding someone from a group in order to punish them?

We see this everywhere. Kid misbehaves, goes to his room. At school? Detention by themselves. Prisoners misbehave? Solitary confinement. Patient on psych ward? Placed into high observation with restricted no access to the general unit (locked door). Couples fighting? They separate for a while until things work out...or not. Etc, etc.

What else can you do since beating them can get you fired and result in hate groups against you if social media finds out?
