~ to increase their faith in God's provision for them, as well as their reliance on Him; ~ so that they would not be unduly burdened or weighed down in their travels, in order to be able to travel as rapidly and widely as possible in their missionary work (as well as to flee persecution quickly if it arose);
~in anticipation of the support of those to whom they would bring the gospel message for things such as lodging, food, and even clothing.
(As Jesus indicated in the parallel passage to this in Matthew's gospel (Matthew 10:5-23), the worker is worthy of his wages (that is, deserves to be compensated for his work.)).
Also, what's interesting is that Jesus told them to remain at one house; so they would learn to be humbly content with the lodging our Lord provided; not to look for better lodgings.
Another thing that is relevant to me, is this gathered people to give to the disciples; towards serving God in what ever gift they could give as beings who were united in One Accord; hence the people offered hospitality... as they were moved in heartfelt ways, to help. Just think how wonderful this was to be; and how the debriefing would be with Jesus when all things that the disciples observed, and experienced were shared with Jesus Christ. What we see here demonstrates that Jesus would reveal to them and all, God's Will, and how it was to be done! Great questions; there's much to glean from these scriptures ` glad to have spotted this question in particular... For God's Grace to be shown; gathering all involved to His Kingdom, deliverance, and providence so many hearts, minds, and souls would be blessed!!
Today those who are ill have to carry something with them or eat. So don't panic if someone does. Or eat anything before. Just be happy they are following Matthew 28:18-20; Matthew 24:14
Romans 14:3
Let the one eating not look down on the one not eating, and let the one not eating not judge the one eating, for God has welcomed him (Her)
They were working for God, much as soldiers, in the military, so God would provide for all their needs and requirements; much better and more efficiently than they could do, for themselves.
He was preparing them for tougher days ahead. They were accustom to traveling with a pack-mule carrying comfort needs. By water they used Peter's fishing vessel equipped with sleeping quarters accommodating over a dozen. They were all independently wealthy and retired under the age of 35. The Zebedee's were ship manufacturers. Matthew retired just over 30 years old to followed Jesus. Jesus also had many rich supporters like Mary, Martha, and Lazarus' family; Mark's family; Joseph of Arimathea's family, etc...
