In the old west, did old forte only have one sergeant per fort?

It depends on how many platoons there were. In general each platoon consisted of 20 (or more) privates, 4 corporals, 2 sergeants and a lieutenant.

As a rule there would be a number of sergeants at a given fort. Only a very small fort if any would only have one sergeant.
