Of course.   Yearly exams make it much more likely that breast cancer will be caught early enough to make successful treatment possible.

But asking here isn't going to tell you the specifics of her case.   There are cancers that can spread fast.  The only way to know what is going on in a specific case is too talk to the person with the cancer and let them tell you what is going on and what the doctor said about their specific case.     Past experience from other people will only give you vague generalities about cancer.  Each case is unique and diagnosed and treated based only on the specifics that apply to each individual case.

mammograms increase the risk of breast cancer but nobody wants to hear that. 

Yes. Mine was tiny when it was found, by mammogram. It's worth starting as soon as the age permitted, so that you have clean scans to compare with later ones.

The sooner they catch it, the better the odds of beating it.  Part of the pathology report after the biopsy will tell you the stage.  Stage 1 is the least developed, stage 4 means the cancer is well developed and metastasized to other organs in the body (not good).
