Lol “allowed”. Good luck with enforcing that. Back when I was 12-14 years old I used to read quite the stuff, and I’m fine. I promise you it’s nothing to worry about.

Girls can read about sex, it's not going to kill them. It's good for them to learn about sex hopefully before they do it. The harmful thing about romances is the same for anyone who reads them which is unrealistic expectations for life. Kind of a condescending question.

My mother had qualms about what I read when I left the children's section of the library and started reading adult fiction, including romances.  I think she peeled into the books I borrowed without my knowing it. (I know she read my diary.)  We argued about the books, and she decided to trust my judgement (somewhat). She'd ask me if I thought I should read the particular book I borrowed. I said, "Yes." She then said, "Just don't read what you know God would not want you to read." And that was that.  I liked the romances, and really, the "bodice rippers" in the library in the 1970s didn't describe the actual sex act move by move and what was described was in "flowery language" which seemed rather silly to me. ("The staff of his manhood"?) I was rather bored if there was more than one or two sex scenes. After the first, they weren't interesting. I wanted the couple to foil the evil guy, declare everlasting love and end with a passionate kiss.

As for today, with sex education, teen girls must know the mechanics of sex by 13 even if not through experience.  I think reading erotic books, or even romances, should be a matter discussed between mother and daughter. I wouldn't be surprised if the girls are still like me and prefer the solve the conflict and commit to each other to reading long sex scenes.

It's good that they learn about it before doing it. Adult fiction is okay, just don't read those that promote abusive relationship, but healthy relationships are okay.

I think you meant, should legal guardians allow teens they are in charge of be exposed to adult material. I still think that's up to the guardian, and I probably would allow it if I had kids, but not every kid is the same. My parents had no qualms about me or my friends watching R rated films when we were kids. No harm no foul. In any case, kids will find a way to obtain adult material with or without your permission.

Allowed and should they are very different questions, they should not because it generates false expectations just like porn does, most people will not be overtly harmed by it but many will. Enforcing such a ban (the should part) would likely to be problematic and harmful also. So like many things, more information on why they are unrealistic would be more helpful.
