My mother fell down the other day, and her ribs are severely bruised.. and now she has lots of congestion. Any suggestions for how to treat it?

The most obvious one is that you should take her to see a doctor to rule out the possibility of any broken ribs or slight punctures of the lungs.

Make sure her will is up-to-date.

If she is 65 or older, it would be a good idea to see a  doc ASAP and get a referral to a respiratory therapist.  Its very common to develop respiratory problems with multiple injured ribs and in older adults, it often leads to pneumonia.  With rib injuries people tend to take shallow breaths to avoid pain, and as a result, they do not clear the mucus from their lungs.  It sounds like she might be in this situation.   If she hasn't seen a doc, go to urgent care or even an ER if she is older and not in excellent health to begin with.

If she's younger and generally healthy, she might try the breathing exercises described at the end of the article at the link.  However, be aware that rib injuries that affect breathing in older adults results in fatal lung infections roughly 20% of the time, so this is not a situation to take lightly.

I would highly advise for her to see a doctor or even take her to A&E. Her ribs may be broken or may just be bruised. But it is better to be safe than sorry.

Bruised? IF she was not seen for emergency treatment, you need to get her seen. Bruising and congestion in the lungs could lead to a blood clot.
