A VLAN is cost efficient because there is no need for additional hardware and wiring.  One single switch can be virtually divided into multiple separate switches. This can be achieved by using VLAN ID's to identify a group of ports that can communicate with one another.  Ports that are in different groups cannot communicate with each other, thus, cut down broadcast traffic between these ports and support security management by the isolation of ports.
