If you tell your friends you are going to Transylvania on
holiday, they might think you are joking. After all, isn’t
Transylvania the home of Count Dracula, the thirsty vampire from
Bram Stoker’s novel? Yes, that is true. However, Transylvania is
also a real place, which is located in the heart of Romania in
Eastern Europe. In fact, many people go there in the hopes of
seeing Dracula’s origin. The question is, though, did Count
Dracula actually exist?
It is commonly believed that Dracula, the book character,
was inspired by a real person named Vlad Dracula. Born in 1431 in
the Transylvanian town of Sighisoara, this prince earned his
nickname “Vlad the Impaler”by the cruel way he punished his
enemies. According to legend, he once impaled 20,000 Turkish
prisoners in one day.
Many places in Transylvania are linked with Vlad and the
Dracula story. One such place is Bran Castle. This 600-year-old
structure is often promoted as Dracula’s Castle. The castle’s
stone stairs and secret halls give visitors the feeling that a vampire
might be waiting around every corner.
