Can you solve this riddle? If so, could you explain it?

I would say D follows the pattern.............

first box has 4 black squares
second box has 5
third box has 6
4th box has 7.
but the 5th box, *also* has 7 (seems like a mistake and there should have been 8 )

and then the last box would have 9........ Choice D.

but the two bottom boxes BOTH have 7.

kinda messes things up.

A.) seems wrong, and both B.) & C.) have 8.........so can't be both answers.........so 9 squares seems correct............but that means the 5th box is a misprint on the exam, and should have 8 boxes, not 7.
