Astro question!! pls help ?
How much greater is the light-collecting area of the Giant Magellan Telescope, a 22 meter telescope currently under construction, compare to the 20 inch telescope on the roof of the SUNY Geneseo Science Building? Don't forget to convert the units in your calculation.

This isn't really an astronomy question, it's a basic math question. You're given the diameter of the two telescopes in question (one in inches, the other in meters). Just convert the two of them to a common measurement unit, either inches or meters, and then their area will be proportional to the square of their diameters.
A 20 inch telescope has a diameter of 0.508 meters ( = 20 inches * 2.54 cm per inch* 0.01 meter per cm)
The ratio of the light collection areas = 22²/0.508² = 1,876
