(a) width of original rectangle = 224/xwidth of new rectangle = 224/x + 1 = (224+x)/x
(b) area of new rectangle :
(x-1) (224/x + 1) = 224+1
224 + x - 224/x - 1 = 225
x - 224/x = 2
x² - 224 = 2x
x² - 2x - 224 = 0
(x-16)(x+14) = 0
x =16 or x = -14(rejected)
∴ x = 16
