The 66 books that comprise the Bible were written on scrolls by about 40 men over a period of some 1,600 years.

It wasn't until A.D. 1228 that Stephen Langton put in chapter divisions.
Then the OT was divided into verses in A.D. 1448 by R. Nathan.
Then the NT was divided into verses in A.D. 1551 by Robert Stephanus.

So, although it's true that the Bible wasn't originally written in numbered chapters and verses, it was not one continuous text until the idea of books was invented. A collection of scrolls were kept in synagogues for what we now call the OT, and another collections of scrolls were kept by Christians for what we call the NT, though they also used all the OT scrolls. The invention of the printing press brought the entire collections together in printed form, into what is called The Holy Bible.

It was put on scrolls and that is because at that time that was the custom for keeping records

The Bible is actually a collection of books put together.

These books originally did not have numbered chapters and verses, correct.

True, scholars introduced chapters and verses into the Bible.

Our numbering system as found in the Bible is a later addition.

Most would also be surprised to find out there wasn't any captial letters or spaces between the words.

In this sentence is the word 'man' could be understood as 'man' in general or as the name of the man Adam.

Each Book Was a book. Those following knew it often by heart.

Jews were the first and they were very careful.

Entire chapters often had hundreds of exact copies.
So it was not continuous from one end to the other.

True, of course.

When do you think the Bible was compiled?
2019-08-30 5:18 pm
Totally false since it was a huge collection of scrolls from which the small selection was made. The collection which became the bible is almost totally different to the vast majority of scrolls!

the bible is a select collection of written biblical stories from over thousands... the councel of Nicea, a group of religious men and scholars got together to vote in which gospels they felt would best represent christianity at that time, they ordered the remaining thousands to be burned or destroyed.. who is to say that the books that were rejected were better or more accurate.. there are a few popping up now.. the dead sea scrolls. Gospel of Barnabas to name a couple.... .. there were no numbers.. just a bunch of written gospels..

It was a collection of hand written scrolls pieced together and numbers and put in book form..

Look up Codex Sinaiticus, you are right but 'continuous' is probably an over-statement

It is what it is. Truth is in the message that has lasted longer than your meager existence. Who do you think is more trustworthy?
2019-08-30 6:12 pm
FALSE!

"Absolute blithering idiocy. The Catholic Church (and by that I mean the ancient apostolic Church which was both the Catholic and Orthodox) COMPILED THE ENTIRE BIBLE. THE BIBLE IS A CATHOLIC DOCUMENT. WE WROTE IT. WE PUT IT TOGETHER. IT IS OURS. YOU STOLE IT YOU ARIAN HERETICS!"

That is correct. The original "gospels" were a complete mess.

Late in the 6th century, Constantine ordered the Council of Nicaea
to create one "unified" Christian Bible which would then eliminate
all of the many hundreds of stories and texts that were touted as
being true, when there was no way to effectively verify them.

Just as in following one single recipe, by creating one Bible, any other
content could be proclaimed as being false and irrelevant, thus enabling
the premise of Christian faith to become inarguable and beyond question.

at the time of Christ the OT had already been written and memorized by the Hebrews. the NT started out as letters written to the various churches of that day, as the letters were circulated among the churches the ones that were seen as authentic were kept and the rest discarded. the ones accepted had to be written by an Apostle or one who knew Jesus or was close to an apostle, ie: Luke and Paul. by the council of Nicaea the "books" were already defined.

False.
The Bible was originally written as more than 60 separate documents (what we call Biblical "books", though note that some of the larger books were at some very early date {we don't know when} divided, for example 1 & 2 Chronicles).
Division of those documents into chapters and, later, verses did not occur until centuries after the Biblical documents were authored.
