The 66 books that comprise the Bible were written on scrolls by about 40 men over a period of some 1,600 years.
It wasn't until A.D. 1228 that Stephen Langton put in chapter divisions.
Then the OT was divided into verses in A.D. 1448 by R. Nathan.
Then the NT was divided into verses in A.D. 1551 by Robert Stephanus.
So, although it's true that the Bible wasn't originally written in numbered chapters and verses, it was not one continuous text until the idea of books was invented. A collection of scrolls were kept in synagogues for what we now call the OT, and another collections of scrolls were kept by Christians for what we call the NT, though they also used all the OT scrolls. The invention of the printing press brought the entire collections together in printed form, into what is called The Holy Bible.
