Yes they are, this is because the 11 year solar cycle is ramping back up for ionospheric skip conditions.
Many people are getting their cb rigs back together for the upcoming 27 Mhz band radio skip solar cycle.
I run a Stryker SR955HPC on the base station and a Anytone AT-6666 in the mobile, converted 11 meter.

CB radios are still in widespread use among truck drivers. Some of them are WAY over powered, and when you pass them on the interstate, you can hear a loud buzzing noise on your car radio.. It's OK with me though. When I see the trucks going slower than usual, it usually means Johnny Law is in the area, and all the drivers have been alerted on the CB.

The beauty of a CB is, you can communicate with truck drivers, or other people, but you can't with a cell phone unless you know their #

I do not see them in CA, but I Do see a lot in AZ and KS. Truckers stil use them. They get out when a cell gets no "bars". I heard of a couple stuck 20 miles from Bowie, no bars. A trucker stopped, got on the ol' 11 meter, skipped to an operator in Casper, Wy-!! He called AAA.

Plus you can grab the mike, none of this pressing a thing to your face. Much more convenient.

One way to know is to listen in. I bet they aren't speaking English. I don't remember the last time I saw a CB antenna on a car in the San Francisco Bay Area, but the band is still available.

10-4 good buddy.
CBs are stilled used by truckers, RV owners, etc.
As for coming back. No info on that question. My guess is average drivers are not putting CBs in their vehicles.

I was into the CB radio thing in the late '60's - late '70's. I shot skip, did T-hunts.
Back then the CB radio was useful. When my mother moved from Los Angeles to Seattle I set up a CB in her car, cigarette lighter power, magnet antenna mount. She was alone, the truckers watched over her.
In the '80's the fad got bad, too many people, the airwaves blocked by too many transmitters. The CB radio became useless.

In the early '80's cell phones came up, CB radios were obsolete.

Cell phones have forced cb radios into obscurity.

With almost everyone having a cell phone I see no use for CB radios other that a hobby. Some people have shortwave radios in their cars.
