Do you get on and off several trains before reaching a destination? Or does it go straight there?

When it’s says “train from Birmingham to London” do you have to get off and take several trains or does it go straight there? I’m really confused, I’ve never travelled this far before

Usually, it means that you should stay on the train. It will make stops along the way, but will terminate in London.

It would be different if they said "train from Birmingham with connections to London."

If you need to change trains the information will be printed on your ticket.
Birmingham to London is normally a straight through service, you'll know when you get there because the train won't go any further.

It really depends on the route you choose and depends on what time specific do you go,
not all train routes are the same
