Gmrs radio question?

I have 2 midland micro mobile mxt 115 in my trucks. I cant for the life of me get the 2 of them to work well will each other. I'm not looking for long range just a clear signal when we are with half a mile of each other. Is there a specific way I need to mount the antenna? Also they seem to get a poor signal while the vehicle is moving and then when it stops it is better. These radios dont work for crap even when we are 100 ft apart. I bought 2 handheld gmrs radios and they work great when we are traveling together. Could there be something obvious that I'm doing wrong or are these radios just junk? I even bought upgraded antennas to improve my signal but that didn't work either.

Too close, maybe, especially if they are 5 watt units.

Since both are in vehicles,
it will be easy to test them at close range
and at evenly spaced distances apart.

My bet is that the signal is too strong due to close proximity
and that a greater spacing will prove to work better.
