New lawn has grown faster than expected, should I cut it now?

Hi everyone. I have no experience in gardening but I have recently done up the back garden in our home. I ripped up all the old decking, laid down some patio and then put down grass seed on the rest for a new lawn. I have read that you should wait until the blades of grass are over 3.5 inches before cutting it and never cut it before 8 weeks as the roots need to strengthen up. However, it has only been 3 weeks and the grass is already 5 inches tall. It has flown up. I'm putting this down to the hot weather we have been having. I'm worried that if it is too tall the sunlight wont get to the base of the blades of grass. However, if I cut it now will it rip the blades of grass out as they have no roots yet?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you. :)

You could cut the tops of the new grass as this will do no harm. I would chop two inches off five inches of growth. The roots will be well established on the grass you describe. Collect the cuttings as new grass can be damaged by old cuttings laying on it.

You could cut the very top. If you do, set your lawn mower blade very high. You should always keep your lawn trimmed to no shorter than 3 inches, otherwise the lawn gets very dry and brown, very quickly. If you leave it a little longer, it stays a lot more green and soft.

Only downside to keeping it a bit longer is you will have to mow it more often, but it is definitely worth the luscious grass!

wait. sunlight not getting to the base does not matter. and water to strengthen the roots if God is not doing it for you
