Expensive watches are an obsolete technology. They are brilliantly engineered, beautifully made, and suitably priced. But a $20 quartz watch from Walmart actually keeps better time! And if you carry a smartphone it gives you an even more accurate time than any watch made (except, possibly, an atomic clock watch that gets its time by radio from WWV. I know there are such things.)

I'd love to have a Rolex or a Breitling pilot watch. But there are so many other things I could buy with the money. It's impossible to justify the purchase based on function, on the need to know the exact time. If I absolutely needed a watch (which actually I don't), I'd buy a cheap quartz watch and replace it every 5 years or so when it breaks (or when I got tired of it).

I don't know. The watch I wear only cost me $235, and that was the sale price. Is that considered expensive?
