My parents are telling me that they is a test you can take to get free money for college. They said it wasn’t FAFSA so I wasn’t sure what it is.

If you have high enough sat scores to be a national merit scholar. That’s probably what they were talking about. It’s also used for scholarships.

If you got an exceedingly high score on your PSATs, you would qualify for a National Merit Scholarship, which would pay for any college of your choice... but you would probably know if you got that - it's a big deal!

FAFSA isn't a test, it's an application. They may have been referencing a SAT which is a test that colleges use as part of the selection procedure. It does not guarantee money for college. Go to your school guidance counselor to find out when the test is and what other resources and scholarships may be available. You have to seek these out. People aren't just going to hand you money.

As others have said, PSAT/NMQST . Many students are casual about the PSAT, thinking it's just a warm-up that doesn't count, but there is real money on the line.

No, there isn’t a test to take to get free money for college.
Scholarships provide money that doesn’t have to be repaid. There are many different scholarships with different requirements. Scholarships direct for your university usually based on your HS GPA. Or an athletic, dance or music scholarship.
The Pell Grant can help pay your tuition and doesn’t have to be repaid. You need to apply for it.

Certain colleges do give awards if you maintain a certain GPA or have had a good GPA throughout Highschool. But there isn't a test for it per se. But your SAT score could allow you to obtain a scholarship, but this is all dependent on the school.

Your parents fill out the FAFSA form with their financial information. That gets processed and the results sent to any schools that have accepted you. They tell you how much financial aid they can offer you in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study. That includes Pell grants. There are some universities who are recruiting students and making financial aid offers based on grades and SAT scores. Those are often the smaller private schools.

In a number of schools, academic scholarships are automatically granted to incoming freshman based on their high school GPA and test scores on the ACT or SAT. No application is required. Texas Tech in one example of a university that does that.
