could spray paint be bad to eye?

someone was using spray paint at the corner as I walked through, I looked away and went away very quickly but I am quite pretty sure that we were close.

I may sometimes have over concern with my eyes. However, by common sense, how likely could spray paint go into my eye and cause any harm? Does our eyes itself have any mechanism to protect them from very small or micro substances / chemicals found in the surrounding
