Why do people think Islam is a religion of peace?

No one really understands anything about the religion. If they did, they would know that it's clearly stated that they want to create peace by the converting or killing of everyone that is not a religious muslim and only that will create total peace on earth.

Because the people who write and spread the doctrine say so.

A religion is defined by the people who practice it. I've lived in Muslim countries, and even have them in my family. They are by and large decent people who don't deserve to be defined by the fanatics.
