Why do all my word documents open up in older versions of word even though I have saved them as Word 2016 files?

Because Word is designed to be backward compatible--newer versions of the software can handle documents saved in the older .doc format, as well as the more current .docx format.

you can only use the version of Word installed on the computer you're using. the Word file is just a file, NOT the whole program...
