Is there any point in trying to talk to people who just assume you're lying whenever your assertions conflict with their preconceptions?

Notice the responses to my own answer: Flat out accusations that I'm lying.

Fellow Christians, why should we bother to discuss matters any further with those who simply accuse us of lying for telling them of what we know ... what we have seen and heard. When you try to share the truth with others, and they tell you that you're lying, and they refuse to consider that any idea which they find hard to believe could possibly be anything other than a lie ... is there any point in trying to discuss things further?

Do these people assume that EVERYONE who expresses a different point of view is LYING? Is this what our society has become? Anyone who disagrees with us must be LYING now?

If this is where we are, there is truly no hope for our society.

Yes Bearclaw: If a Cthulhu even evangelist tells me Cthulhu is the only way, I have every right to dismiss him and his stories. But I do NOT have the right to call him a LIAR unless I can prove that HE (or she) is LYING unless I can PROVE the evangelist does not believe what he or she is saying.

Eddie J: If you HONESTLY BELIEVE that's the amount of that substance on Mars then NO! You ARE NOT LYING. You may be MISTAKEN. But you are not lying. Now, you aren't SURE about the amount of that material on Mars, that's another matter. I have met Christ ... encountered God at a deeper level than I have ever encountered a human being. I am more SURE about Him than I am of the sun in the sky or the existence of the person in the next room. Yes ... I DO know or I would not SAY that I know.

Nous: By that logic, no historian's work is of any value. Seriously? That's not even a rational argument.

Jea: I'm sorry if I have ever personally attacked you. I certainly will not call you a liar for saying you love your family. I assume you do. But you PERSONALLY, and others, have accused me and other Christians of LYING, not just being wrong. You did it in the first comment to my answer on the question I linked to in my original details. When accused of lying ... yes, we will defend ourselves. Now, if we could all just stop accusing each other of LIES, we might get somewhere.

That's simply what New Atheism is. I have been called a liar after proving the statement I made.

We're dealing with NPC's, they only have a few programmed responses for every question asked

If only you would discuss. Address the issue, not personally attacking those who disagree with you. I don't assume you are lying, nor do others. But we still catch you doing it. Day in and day out christians lie to and about atheists here. If you missed that fact, it is because you didn't even look. This question is dishonest in that regard. You are making false accusations aren't you. You certainly can project. I get called a liar for saying I love my kids. And my Hubby. Why do theists need to constantly do that? Do you think it helps prove your unsupportable position to call us names? What kind of dishonest society do you wish for anyway?

REALITY, EDUCATION, TRUTH!

The only way primitive religion exists today is through the child abuse of forcing it into very, very young children but thanks to better education and growing intellects so many teens are able to discover the truth, throw off the indoctrination and step into the real world!

So atheism is not a conscious decision or a belief but a realisation!

The first person to produce a single tiny little piece of verifiable evidence for any god will become world famous and mega rich!

Academia states that in the absence of any sort of evidence of the existence of something it must be deemed not to exist until verifiable evidence is found - thus god is held not to exist pending some sort of verifiable evidence.

The bible is what is called "Faction” A fictional story set in a factual time and place. Thus the time, place and real historical characters are all correct but the fictional characters and stories are not!

There is not one single mention of Jesus in the entire Roman record - that is right - not one! At the same time as he was supposed to have been around there were a number of Jews claiming to be the messiah - all of whom are well recorded!

There is not a single contemporary record from any source and even the bible mentions of him like all other references were not written until many years after his supposed death!

He was supposed to have been a huge problem to the Romans and produced wonderful miracles but still not one contemporary record?

Even the bible mentions of him like all other references were not written until many years after his supposed death!

Pilate is recorded in the Roman record as a somewhat lack luster man but no mention of a Jesus, a trial or crucifixion that would surely have been used to make him look brighter!

At best he was an amalgam of those others but almost certainly never existed!

Not one word of it is contemporary with the period and was not written until several hundred years after the period the story is set in!! How did the apostles write their books more than a hundred years after they would have been dead?

Christianity is an invention of the Italians and that is why it came from the Holy ROMAN Catholic church!

Please realize that those claims for the Old historians are worthless since they were not even born until long after everyone in the stories would have been so long dead!

Josephus AD 37 – AD 100
Tacitus AD 56 – AD 120
Suetonius - 69 – 130 AD
Pliny the Younger, 61 AD – 112 AD
Justin Martyr (Saint Justin) AD103–165 AD
Lucian - AD 120 -180 AD but he was hostile to Christianity and openly mocked it.
Pamphilius AD 240-309 AD
Eusebius AD 263 – 339 AD
Photius AD 877 – 886 AD

Thallus - But there are no actual record of him except a fragment of writing which mentions the sack of Troy [109 BC] Showing that he was clearly not alive in biblical times.

Some even try to use Seneca. 4 BCE – 65 CE but as a Stoic Philosopher he opposed religion yet made not a single mention of a Jesus or Christianity!

Even funnier is trying to claim Celsus AD ? – 177 AD Who said that Jesus was a Jew who’se mother was a poor Jewish girl whose husband, who was a carpenter, drove her away because of her adultery with a Roman soldier named Panthera. She gave birth to an illegitimate child named Jesus. In Egypt, Jesus became learned in sorcery and upon his return presented himself as a god.

Research shows whilst education reduces religious belief each year of further education reduces religious belief by up to 10%!

If I said there are 3.2 megatons of iron on Mars, it's possible that the number I picked out of thin air MIGHT be the right number.

So, since I do NOT know it's the wrong number, I'm not lying. Is that what you are claiming?

But, I'd say it's a lie if I didn't KNOW that it's correct.

And, the truths that you proclaim -- you need to admit that you do NOT know those things.

When you claim to KNOW things that you cannot possibly know then you should expect people to say you are lying.

------------------------
Edit:
You said you have met Christ.

So, if someone has a delusion that they met Christ so they honestly believe they met him, you wouldn't consider that to be a lie. You would rather that they just call you delusional?

OK -- you're not lying -- you are just delusional.

Are you happy now?

If a man walks up to you and claims that Cthulhu is real, and that the only possible hope for eternal life is to bow down and worship the Great Old Ones, and that every word written by H.P. Lovecraft is true, and you ask him to present objective, empirical, confirmable evidence to support his claims and he REFUSES to present anything except "But it's all right here in this book!!!!" then you have every right to dismiss his claims as insane fantasy UNLESS you have observable evidence to support his claims that can be documented and corroborated.

Christians have NO objective proof of their claims. All atheists are saying is that there is no proof of any god. None. Based on that fact there is no logical reason to believe in an such deity.

If you make a claim that something exists, per Burden of Proof, then you are ETHICALLY obligated to defend your claim with solid evidence. If you cannot.....

The other problem is that Christians claim that their mythology is historical truth. It is not. It is plagiarized myths and fables, and the minimum amount of actual historical research proves this. When a person claims that myth is truth, and keeps doing so in order to deceive others into believing it, then they are LYING, and it is the moral and ethical obligation of those who know the truth to present it in order to stop the spread of misinformation.

That's the difference between us. I know that Cthulhu is a literary invention of Lovecraft, based on the ancient Sumerian Kutulu, and I have every right to call the evangelist a liar and laugh him down the street.
I ALSO know that the Bible is quite clearly a collection of myths, fables, and stories, and that anyone claiming them to be true is assuming Burden of Proof. If you continue to claim that they are true sans evidence, then you are at the LEAST being intellectually dishonest and a liar at the worst.
