i also worked in retail after high school and while i went to community college. i worked in the same store for six years. after i got my associates degree, i got a new job with family connections in a completely different industry. i worked from home, technically self employed in the commercial building industry working with architects. after six years there, i started again to job search looking for other opportunities that had better benefits, career advancement, and a great culture. again, i also worked in a different industry in computer software, though similar inside sales type work.

just start looking around. some companies will hire people with unrelated industry experience, so they can train them without having any potential bad habits. other companies will take on new hires with no experience and just work there way up. use site like glassdoor, indeed, or even LinkedIn.

be prepared to ask why you want to leave or have left and looking for other opportunities.

but we don't know anything about you and your work preferences. so you have to figure that out on your own.

When you're filling out job applications/interviewing, make sure you stay positive. Hiring managers don't want workers who are going to become "tired" of the new job within 6 months to a year. Tell them you're interested in taking on new challenges and would be excited to step into something career-oriented. Banks, call centers, nursing homes, garbage companies, etc. are always hiring. You might be able to get a job doing cleaning or food service work, too.

I'm 23 and work in the retail industry as well, but I've kept the same job since I since I was 19. Sometimes good jobs are hard to find. Just try to hang on to what you have. What were you doing between the ages of 18-22? Do you have any college experience? Generally speaking, employers don't like to see gaps in employment history unless it was for educational purposes.

If you don't have the proper skills to land a full time job, you might need to look for a second job so you can gain experience in another industry.

Better? Better in what way? More money? More hours? Flexability? Easier?
Lighter? Room for advancement? What do you consider better?
Your choices, in the sector, are just going to be different type of venue, other stores, the pay is going to be pretty much the same however. You can try working at a spa, gym, movie theater, amusement park, there are many options.
