Normal water contains enough tritium (3H) to show 5.5 decompositions per minute per 100. g of water. Tritium has a half-life of 12.3 years. A friend has a bottle of vintage Cabernet Sauvignon wine that claims to have been produced 50 years ago. How many decompositions per minute should you expect to observe in 200 g of that wine? Assume that the wine is made of pure water for this problem.

Number of half-lives = (50 years) / (12.3 years) = 4.065

(5.5 decompositions per min / 100 g) × (200 g) × (1/2)⁴˙⁰⁶⁵ = 0.66 decompositions per min
(to 2 sig. fig.)
