Compare the gravitational force on a 15.5 kg mass at the surface of the Earth (with radius 6.4 × 10^6 m and mass 6 × 10^24 kg) with that on the surface of the Moon (with mass 1/81.3ME and radius 0.27RE)
What is the force on the Earth in units of N? What is it on the Moon?

Gravitational constant, G = 6.67408 × 10⁻¹¹ m³ kg⁻¹ s⁻²

Gravitational force on the earth
= G m Mₑ / Rₑ²
= (6.67408 × 10⁻¹¹ m³ kg⁻¹ s⁻²) × (15.5 kg) × (6 × 10²⁴ kg) / (6.4 × 10⁶ m)²
= 152 kg m s⁻²
= 152 N

Gravitational force on the moon
= G m Mₑ / Rₑ²
= (6.67408 × 10⁻¹¹ m³ kg⁻¹ s⁻²) × (15.5 kg) × (6 × 10²⁴ / 81.3 kg) / (6.4 × 10⁶ × 0.27 m)²
= 25.6 kg m s⁻²
= 25.6 N
