Can I use rustoleum primer for acrylic urethane paint?

I am doing a cheap paint job on a truck and have purchased acrylic urethane paint. I didn't think to buy primer at the same time. How I'm wondering if I can just use rustoleum primer with this acrylic urethane paint. Thanks

Sure you can. In fact, I will let you. You will do it anyways no matter what we say just trying to prove something. Who knows, you MIGHT GET LUCKY.
OR, you will suffer. So 50/50 chance of doing it good.

The short answer is yes, you can paint over the rustoleum primer. The long answer is any topcoat is only as good as the base coat it covers. You could put million dollar paint on as a top coat but if the base coat fails it'll just be million dollar flakes of paint. Having said that, I've never heard anything bad about rustoleum primer failing when applied to a properly prepared surface but you need to be aware of the possibility

You can, but it is a bad idea.

Read the label on the primer can, and the acrylic urethane paint can. Some primers and paints will not mix. It is best to use primer and paint from the same manufacturer, that is stated to be compatible with each other. Good luck on your paint job.

HI using water based paint with a solvent based paint is the issue.
