A sample of neon occupies a volume of 461 mL at STP. What will be the volume of the neon when the pressure is reduced to 700 torr? Assume constant temperature.

At STP: V₁ = 461 mL, P₁ = 760 torr
New: V₂ = ? mL, P₂ = 700 torr

For a fixed amount of gas at constant temperature (Boyle's law): P₁V₁ = P₂V₂
V₂ = V₁ × (P₁/P₂)
New volume, V₂ = (461 mL) × (760/700) = 501 mL (to 3 sig. fig.)
