Can I still file for 2017 Tax?

During 2018 tax season I was overseas for family emergency where later my brother passed away. My world was upside down. Upon arriving to the states I received penalty for failing to file for 2017 tax. I am preparing to file for 2018! I see my 2017 W2 form online and it gives me an option to import thru turbotax and to file. Should I proceed or is this more complicated to the extent it might require tax professional?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can still file. Just keep everything separated by tax year. Use 2017 forms and/or 2017 version of a tax software program along with your 2017 tax statements to file your 2017 tax return.

Use all things 2018 to file your 2018 return.

I believe you will have to mail the 2017 return, but you can still use Turbo Tax or any other (2017) tax software program. You will just have to print the forms and mail paper copies when you get to the end.

So there's no reason to hire a tax pro if you're comfortable doing them yourself.

Also, sorry to hear about your brother.

Don't import your 2017 W2 to 2018 TT. You will need to have a professional file it for you or file on paper. The rules have changed for 2018 returns and you need to file each year on the proper forms and under the rules in effect at the time.

you can't file 2017 electronically anymore. TT can do it but then you print it out, sign it, attach w-2, and mail.

I am almost 100% sure you have to file previous years by mail. You may be able to enter into tax software & print & mail.. I don't believe you can file it electronically though. Check me on this, but like I said, pretty sure.

You can still file a 2017 return. In fact you are still required to do it.

Do not combine any 2017 and 2018 documents. File both of Form 1040 for 2017 and Form 1040 for 2018, based on your W-2's and any other documents for each year.

Filing late doesn't make filing any more complicated. If you would have done it yourself if it had been on time, go ahead and do it yourself now.

Filing for 2017 late is just like filing for 2017 on time.
