The IUPAC name of the compound in U.S. form is 5-ethyl-3,7,9-trimethyl-2-decanol.
The IUPAC name of the compound in British form is 5-ethyl-3,7,9-trimethyldecan-2-ol.

1. The principal function is the -OH group which is named as a suffix -ol.
2. The parent chain (the longest chain containing the -OH group) has 10 C atoms without multiple bonds, and thus the parent chain is named as -decan- (the last letter "e" is omitted as it followed by the "o" in -ol suffix. In numbering the parent chain, number the C atom attached to the -OH group the smallest number (2). Hence, the parent chain as well as the principal functional group is named as -2-decanol (U.S. form) or -decan-2-ol (British form).
3. Three methyl groups are in positions 3, 7 and 9 and one ethyl group is in position 5. As "e" (in "ethyl")is followed by "m" (in methyl) in alphabetic order, name ethyl in front of methyl.
