if buying from large fleet like yellow/checker cabs in a big metropolitan area, I can, first hand, tell you that they are well maintained and have a stringent maintenance schedule and in some locations, an accelerated schedule. as a cab in the shop makes 0 money. they commonly run them to 500k. all due to maintenance and quality parts. we viewed the value of a platform as "can it pay for itself".
for abuse, owners never beat their vehicles. for the most part, the renter of a cab (driver-not owner), takes it easy because they pay for the fuel they consume. time, un-paid miles, and mpg impact their wages directly.

cosmetics is an entirely different animal. ppl get sick, wet their pants (drunks), pets, vandalize, accidents(sheet metal), all that happens.

none of that can be said about the small towns w owners that use their personal vehicles for both.
not saying this yota is a good buy. just that, depending on where/who/company you buy from, don't discredit its value just cause it was a cab. give it the same scrutiny you would any other platform. giving a wee bit of grace re- high miles.

the type of platform used depends on location. Chicago, relatively flat, roomy low mpg rolla seems logical. Seattle, hills, snow, rolla no workie.
