First, YOU are the employee.

Depends on what you claimed as allowances, 0,1,2,3?

If they did you will get the difference refunded.

If they did you will get them back with your refund. Does this $3850.72 include FICA and social security? If it's Federal only they are taking too much out for sure and it sounds like you must have claimed single with no excemptions.. You can change your w4, so they take out less which will reduce your refund next year, but give you more money in each pay check.

What NUMBER did you put on your W-4? That's what you use to direct how much the employer takes out. If they take out too much it's because you tole them to, but you'll get it back, that's what your refund is. If they don't take out too much, you don't get a refund.

Total taxes or just income taxes?

FICA (Socialist Security) and Midicare total 7.65%, that's $1,932 right there.

Then figure about $1000 month personal exemption, so 13,000 taxable, withholding 10% of that that would be another $1300. That's $3200. So do I think Uncle Sam would give your employer guidelines to withhold $600 more than you would expect to owe? Yes I think they would.

But if $3850 was just federal withholding then yes they withheld too much. But if you made that working just 6 months then you were withheld at the $50k rate and then $3850 withheld would also be normal.
