The hardware on an XP computer is not going to run Win 8 or Win 10. You would need to completely overhaul your computer's hardware to get it modernized to do so and by the time you did all of that you would have spent more than what a new laptop or new PC costs. Laptops and desktops are dirt cheap these days because they compete with iPads, smartphones, etc. I recommend you go to Dell.com website and browse their laptops/desktops and you will see how cheap they are these days. Or you can go into a big box store if you prefer and do the same thing
First make sure that your computer has the memory and cards to run one of the newer OSs. You will need to have new drivers for your cards and other things that you may have added. And stay away from Windows 8 as it is junk. I would go to Windows 7 as I am running all three OSs on my computers and have never ran Windows 8. Also windows 10 is still having problems as Microsoft tries to force updates that are buggy and unchecked as they want the people using that OS to do their trouble shooting.
Forget about paying to upgrade a computer that age. If it's a laptop it likely isn't capable of running Windows 8 or 10. If it's a desktop that's been properly upgraded, then it could be updated to Windows 8 or 10, but it may be smarter to purchase a new or newer computer with a warranty.
it is more appropriate to upgrade it to windows 7. often an XP pc CPU doesnt have the CPU features for the 64 bit OS. And there is no obligation to provide old drivers for old chipsets. Even W7 doesnt always go onto an XP age of pc these days you need 4gb ram (minus a bit as old pc's cant quite get to 4gb.. you can download and create a bootable USB for W7 or W10 (appropriate versions of either 32 or 64 bit.) from the microsoft website. You can buy a w7 Licence on various auction sites for a couple of bucks. W10 is a bit more expensive
You PC may be too old for the newer Windows operating systems. My suggestion is get a PC through Amazon that has been refurbished and you'll save a hundred or more. Make sure it has been "certified refurbished" by a authorised Microsoft repair shop. I've bought 2 refurbished PCs,a Dell with Windows 10 and Lenovo with Windows 7 and have been happy with them both.
