A slave named Androcles once escaped from his master and fled to the forest. As he was wandering about there he came upon a lion lying down moaning and groaning. At first he turned to flee, but finding that the lion did not pursue him, he turned back and went up to him. As he came near, the lion put out his paw, which was all swollen and bleeding, and Androcles found that a huge thorn had got into it, and was causing all the pain.

finding---gerund;and had but---conjunction+be+adv meaning only.
It being an Androcles-------Absolute construction=It being a slave.
the escaped slave------>=who is the escaped slave, adj phr.----------,
who later had the finding(gerund)(1) as Absolute construction element
who turned to fleeing(2)---->,clause,gerund, Absolute construction element
a thorn in causing all the pain(3)--------->Absolute construction in the (-ing form) non-finite, verbless,as a phrase, causing meaning in past participle element
"and" "had but" the finding (4)that-------->but=adv meaning only;finding=gerund; that="are compelled to" as noun cl.--as Absolute construction phrase element
he(5)------->subject of Absolute Construction ;meaning he was trying to do etc. etc. etc. etc. connecting of 4 noun and 4 participles and perhaps with 4 other accompanying words. An Absolute phrase 4 is usually used adverbially here.
