Will oiling pistol magazines help?

I have a Ruger Security 9, 15Rds, Double stacked. Loading the magazine is next to impossible. My thumb is quite sore after just a couple of rounds. Is there a trick to loading without having so much trouble?

Large capacity magazines are always difficult to load especially when they are new and for the last 3 or 4 rounds when you top off. You don't use oil which actually could gunk-up the springs and followers as well as attract dust and debriefs.

What you do is buy what are called, "pistol magazine speed loader." There are many makers of the device which are made specifically for each magazine. Just as an example of one such speed loader for a Ruger Security 9 is this - https://www.ebay.com/p/MAKERSHOT-Speedloader-for-Ruger-Security-9-9mm-Pistol-Magazine-Speed-Loader/9018967111

Magazines are not dangerous and will never be banned.

The difficulty you are experiencing is due to spring tension. Lubricant will not noticeably help. Your best bet is to do 5 sets of 10 thumb presses every other day with increasing weight. Also, thumb wrestling may offer some help as well.

I always put "something" in mine when I clean them. A little spray of CLP, or dry lube may help the mag function- but it will not make it easier to load.
Sirbobby's suggestion is your best bet- a mag loader.

I had the same problem until I bought a mag loader. I think the name is MagLula. made in Israel.
My problems were over. Cabela's has them as well as most sporting goods stores. You will be glad
you bought it after you load one mag.

EDIT: Do not oil your mag. A simple wipe down might be OK but oil attracts dust and dirt and
eventually you could have a build up of grime.

Friction isn't the problem, it's the stiffness of the magazine springs. Most new magazines are a bit stiff, and this feeling can be compounded by someone being new to dealing with loading them. Check the manual for advice first, of course, but you may need to experiment a little with the angle you insert and push the rounds. A big part of it is practice, getting accustomed to how to load your particular magazines most efficiently. You can also buy a magazine loader to help, as others have suggested.

How are you liking the Security 9? I was looking at buying one last year but found a deal on something else.

Find a magazine loader... it helps hold the spring down while you load.

Do NOT put oil on it. It is not a rust or friction problem. The spring has to be strong to ensure the rounds are pushed up so they can feed properly. There are reloading tools that help load magazines, ask about them at a gun store. You might try wearing a glove on the hand that you use to thumb the rounds down into the magazine.

I reside in a temperate rain forest and oil magazine springs
with an oily rag. My treks are drippy and muddy. My springs
have functioned since the mid-90's with no replacement.

oh wait. im not a bot. i mean...

no. you dont really want any type of lubricant in your magazine, because the mags hold rounds, rounds hold powder, and powder hates moisture. but if your feeling friction, take the magazine apart and wipe down the follower.

There is a very basic tool designed for this problem. Ask at the gunshop.

Get a speed loader.

The oil idea will not help and can cause jams in the long run. If your having that much trouble your forcing the bullets in instead of working them in the correct way. Try reading your manual again more carefully. Each clip has it own trick!

Dust a little graphite powder, nothing more. Keep your magazines dry and dirt free.
I realize some magazine springs can be a major ***** after pushing serveral rounds in but keep with it. Speed loaders can make things a bit more tolerable.
I find i prefer to finger load all rounds, not using a speedloader.
