Did G.K Chesterston's 'Father Brown' character have a first name?

I've come across once reference (from a book on Google Books) saying his first name was Ignatius, but I've seen no reference in any of the stories to confirm this.

Probably not Ignatius. Ignatius implies him being a Jesuit which he was not.

I've seen references to "Paul", a name meaning small or short. Could be an oblique reference to him being humble. He could also be "John" as to honor a close friend of Chesterton. There was a reference once to him being "J. Brown." These first names may have been what other characters in the stories called him, however.

Keep in mind that an author as skilled as Chesterton would have levels of meaning in his stories. Character's names would be chosen for some specific meaning, whether or not the reader would realize it. I personally think Chesterton left out the first name deliberately and chose a common and bland last name to make Father Brown inconspicuous so his analytical skill would stand out.
