Can I drive into another state with a cdl vehicle if I'm not registered in that state?

I am in Vermont and I just bought a truck in NY. I have a truck here in Vermont that I could use to go pick up the truck I bought in NY. The problem is I don't have dot numbers and I'm not registered to go to NY. My question is can I legally go into NY with my truck to get my new truck? I've been told that all I have to do is put a sign on the truck that says "not for hire" and I'm good to go but, I'm not sure about that. I don't run a log book in VT because I operate within a 100 mile radius. Does anyone know the rules on this or the penalty for being caught? Thanks

You've probably got the truck and the answer by now, but here is what a CDL driver told me: "Get a buddy who regularly drives in both states to do the driving for you. He'll KNOW the answer. Even the VT and NY DOT offices might get you the wrong answer, but a real does-it-all-the-time guy will know for sure."

Call the NYDOT. You may need a special permit.

I would make the assumption that your travel to procure the NY vehicle would be considered "commerce", as you are using a commercial motor vehicle, and the purpose of the NY vehicle would be to add it to your inventory of profit generating trucks. Thus related to your business pursuits.
It is was for personal use, or restoration etc. , your "not for hire" notion would carry more weight.
If it is road ready, and can pass a pre-trip inspection, then "driveaway /towaway would be the best option legally.
Depending on the distance between your "home" and destination, you could still invoke the 100 air mile radius rule, and skip the log book, but remember you would need to back that up with a time sheet entry towards your business on file at your "home terminal". And that would put you back into conducting "commerce".

You can drive a properly licensed vehicle in any state. Commercial vehicles may have to pay fees in states they are passing through.
