Look for a good quality food. Look for something that is grain free, and has real meat. Iams is not a good quality food, but its not the worst either. Finding a high quality dry food is really hard, because dry food isn't good for a cat.
If your parents don't like dealing with the wet food, you should offer to do it. Give one meal as wet food, like breakfast or dinner. Then the other schedules feeding can be the dry food, and it can be done with the timed feeder you have. This helps get better nutrition to your cat, but also helps with weight loss.
Be sure to feed the right portion too. Cats loose weight just like people do. You can eat tons of veggies, but if you eat too many calories you will still gain weight. Even on a diet food, your cat can still gain weight. Feed smaller portions. If you are a bit confused on how much to feed your cat, call your vet. Your vet should be able to give you free advice about this as long as your cat has been seen within the last year.
Weight management foods are a joke, as they replace healthy meats and fats with carbohydrates. Dry foods - grain free or otherwise - are too high in carbohydrates and the bottomless food bowl will result in obesity, and diabetes, constipation, urinary tract disorders, and kidney disease. Ditch all dry and feed a quality canned food - one where a real meat is the first ingredient and not by products. Meal feed the cat - she gets fed twice a day, 1/3 of her allotment at each feeding. This way there is no food out to stink up the place. And quality chicken based foods do not stink. Remind your parents that health issues from overfeeding are much more expensive than feeding properly in the first place.
No cat needs diet food. What it needs is QUALITY food. Iams is GARBAGE. It's made mostly of corn with NO real meat. I'm also certain you're leaving it out all the time which is why your cat is so fat.
Switch your cat to a food that is GRAN FREE and with real meat as the first ingredient. Blue Buffalo Wilderness and Wellness Core are both excellent foods and easily found at Petco, PetSmart and online via Amazon.
To get the weight off your cat just put a small handful out twice a day - that's all your cat needs. It should be getting a quality canned food as well. Foods made with chicken and turkey don't have the stink of ones made with fish and are actually far better for your cat.
Dry food. Got to petsmart or you local petshop and look for the science hills brand.
Thats the best quality brand for your cat!! Promise
Actually dry food of any kind causes a cat to gain weight. Canned food twice a day and NO dry food will help keep your cat at a good weight.
First you need to have your vet determine how much weight she needs to lose. You don't want a fast weight loss either. By putting down a portion of food for a meal and no snacks and monitoring weekly weight you will have better success.
Since you only have one cat, you will need to give her portions of canned food (1/3 of a 6 ounce can) per meal. Cover the rest in the can and serve another 1/3 at the next meal. You can warm up the food with a little hot water and mix it so it warms up from the fridge. Do NOT microwave the food.
Also she will need to be more active. If you have stairs, you can get her to chase toys up and down the stairs. Laser lights will work well for this.
show your parents the research. Dry food besides causing obesity is also the number 1 cause of diabetes, kidney disease, blockages as well as causing a host of other problems. Cats are obligate carnivores and aren't made to eat dry food. Cats cannot even chew their jaws only move up and down not side to side

Most cat food bags recommend too much food. This results in obesity.
Make a mix of 1 cup dry/2tablespoons canned/1 cup water. Feed only about 1/4 cup, 2x per day. She may be eating out of boredom, but will be fine. Many cats also want to eat other things such as cooked vegetables, squash, etc. That's o.k.
You can buy a plant called Dracanea, and she may nibble on that. It's good for digestion and avoiding furballs.
DO NOT leave food out for "self-feeding". That's not healthy and leads to obesity. The food needs to be portioned out as above.
Play with the cat, getting her to run around. Some cats also like to go outside to explore, which gives them something to do. BUT, only if not scared, and ONLY during daytime and just brief periods, good weather. Any cat who is afraid to be outdoors should NOT be outside.
If kitty doesn't slim down with the above ideas, take to the vet.
Just give her somewhat less of what she already eats.
I used to make my pets food. it was cheap and healthy and my pets never got sick. I would cook some lean protein (meat or chicken) mix in some brown rice and mix in some frozen mixed veges. I would cook it all up and put it in plastic bags and freeze. for the other meal u could give biscuits.
Before you buy her food check the fats i mean what is wrong with a chubby cat :3
