I recently bought a Federal Signal STH10A which is actually a siren from my local fire station and i was wondering how i can power it. It has a 3 phase 240 volt motor with 3450 rpm's I believe and I just need to know what I have to do to power this thing up. The motor on it has a junction box and from the junction box there's a fairly long conduit with wires. What do i do to the wires? what kind of tools and equipment do i need? Thanks.

sorry, the motor is 10hp.

you need an electrician before you kill yourself.

And you need a source of 3 phase power at 240 volts, which is not available in most homes. Contact the electric company and they will run a special cable into your house, but for a lot of money.

I found an inverter that will convert 120 VAC single phase to 230 volts 3 phase that will drive motors up to 1 HP. You didn't list the rating of your motor.

You do not have three phase power in your home or garage. It will cost a lot to have it installed. Ask your power company for a cost to install it. What you have is a good source of scrap copper.

10HP, Are you sure because 10HP electric motors are very large?
In any case VFD are available that big, and much bigger.
Just search for "10hp VFD". It's a big business.

What is the HP rating of the motor? You may be able to find a single phase 120V or 240V motor to replace the 3-phase one.

Are there any legalities to consider in your municipality as to operating a siren?
