Can my past employer give out my information?

Recently I was let go of for clocking in from lunch about 6 or 7 minutes late. It was my first offense in the almost 3 years I worked there. The boss was having a bad day, and about 15 minutes after I punched in I was called into the office, cussed at, then fired. I was almost in shock over it because I had a good work ethic, and never had any complaints from co workers about me (as far as I know) I went home and after talking to a few people I filed for unemployment. I didnt tell anyone I worked with that I was. Around 2 days later one of my old co workers messaged me saying I'll have to go to a hearing. I didnt know what he meant, because this was my first time ever applying for unemployment. I asked him what he meant. He said that it was going around the workplace that I filed, and they were fighting it. The only way that could have happened is if my boss started telling everyone that I did. Is that against any laws that they can tell the employees details of what i was doing, seeing as it concerned my private information? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

No, that WAS NOT your first offense. It was the proverbial last straw. It MAY have been the first time you committed that specific offense.
Yes, your employer CAN tell anyone WHY your were fired. NOTHING you mention here is private information.

Revealing that you've filed for unemployment was not illegal because it's not privileged information.

They have no obligation to keep it secret that you filed for unemployment. You being late and being fired for it isn't private information.

Your old employer can give out whatever information on you that he wants. They don't all do that. Some are more talkative than others. Some will just confirm that you worked there and the dates. Some have very large blabbermouths - it just depends on them. It's perfectly legal, just not nice. Why did you file for unemployment when you were fired? You do realize that you committed fraud, don't you? Now you have given him reason to blab everywhere what a greedy sob you are for trying to obtain benefits to which you are not entitled. Better hope that the unemployment office is too busy to have you criminally charged. Many of them are, in which case, they will just deny the benefits.

Nothing you mentioned is against the law. The only argument you could make is if it was not true.

....I am a retired police officer. I retired as a sergeant, after 29 years, from a very large department, about 12,000 officers. I was a patrol officer for 4 years in a very diverse area. I was a tactical officer in the high rise project areas of my city. We called it vertical patrol in that we walked the the stairways of the high rises most of the time. I did that for 5 years and was promoted by test to detective. I worked violent crime (homicide, sex, officer involved shootings, robbery, kidnapping, serious non property incidents) for 11 years until I was promoted to sergeant. I worked as a street supervisor, a bicycle patrol supervisor and a desk sergeant/watch commander.
During my time as a tactical officer and a detective I was a unit representative for the police union.
I have a B.A in English and an M.S. in Law Enforcement Administration....

sorry to tell you, but the only people who are eligible for UI benefits are those who have been laid off..............if an employee quits or is fired, then he/she is not eligible for the UI benefits

and as for your former co-workers knowing anything - you would have had to tell one of them as it's not possible to know who has or has not filed for UI benefits

You need to talk to a labor attorney. Your supervisor may or may not have had the authority to terminate your employment for being a few minutes late returning from lunch.
