I have something to do for school, with my camera I need to make a picture of two objects, one in the front and one in the back. For the first photo I need to make the object in the front sharp and background blurry and for the second photo I need to make the object in the back sharp and the foreground blurry. I've been trying for hours and can't seem to find it, I have a slr camera

This assignment is all about depth of field. As you know (or should know if you've been reading your textbook), depth of field is controlled by three things: aperture, focusing distance and focal length.

In essence, what you need to do is set your camera to produce a shallow depth of field. Then set the objects up so that when you focus on one of the objects, the other is outside of the depth of field being produced by your aperture, focusing distance and focal length of your lens. This means that the items should not be within a few inches of each other, but at least 3 or 5 feet at the least.

The further the distance is between the two objects, the easier it'll be to get on in focus and the other out.

There a multitude of aperture and focal length settings and focusing distances that can produce an acceptable set of images.

The best aperture settings would be at f/4 or smaller such as f/1.8.
The best focal length would be 50mm or longer. Avoid using short focal lengths since the shorter the focal length the greater the depth of field, which is what you're trying to avoid in this assignment.

Set up or choose two objects that are not too close. Get close to the first object since the closer the focusing distance, the shallower the depth of field, which is what you're trying to achieve.

You need to practice shooting with various apertures and various focal lengths to really get what these settings will allow you to do.

To make this easy, get two friends. Position the first one 10 feet away from you and the second, 20 feet away from you. You should see them both clearly through your camera's viewfinder. Allow them to make wacky poses. Make sure the background is at least 50 feet away from you and that the sun is behind your back. It is best to do this right after sunrise or a few minutes before sunset.

Set the camera to Av mode (Canon, Pentax, Sony) or A mode (Nikon). Zoom in to the max. Turn the wheel to select the lowest f/number available. Focus on the friend nearest to you and take shots. Check to see that the second person is blurred. If not blurred enough, have him move back further. For the second photo in your assignment, focus on the second person and take more shots. Check to see if the one nearer to you is blurred enough. If not, have that friend move closer to you.
