中文裡, 我們要舉例的時候, 會這麼說:
譬如(說)/舉例來說/比方說 ...
其中的 [...] 多半是個句子.
在英文裡的慣用語就是 [ for instance] / [for example]
它是個副詞片語, 可以放句首, 句中, 或句尾.
We have rules here. (我們這兒是有規矩的)
For instance, you can't bring a gun with you. =
You can't, for instance, bring a gun with you. =
You can't bring a gun with you, for instance.
(比方說, 你不能隨身攜帶槍枝)
但是有時候中文會這樣表達:
就拿...(的例子)來說(吧/好了).
通常其中的 [...] 是個名詞. 其中這個"拿", 在英文裡就是用take.
Diseases can be very hard to treat. (疾病有時候很難治療)
Take diabetes for example. =
Take, for example, diabetes. =
For example, take diabetes. (就拿糖尿病來說好了)
其中的逗號是為了方便閱讀, 加上最好, 不加也不能說錯.
有時候, 這裡的[for example/for instance]甚至都會省略.
