I smell gas up close on my stove burner?

So, I smelled it around the burner (whenever I would walk by) at first and that has gone away since I opened a door and turned on the fan, but there is still a smell on the burners when I get close to them and smell them. (I know that probably isn’t smart I’m sorry)

Should I worry?

I’d call the gas company and have them look at it. You could have a gas leak

Any time you smell gas in your home you need to take it seriously. The most common cause for a gas smell from burners is that someone accidentally turned one of them slightly on, so gas escapes but no flame. This can easily happen when cleaning the stove, or from bumping up against one of the dials. Open a window to vent out the gas.

Make sure all your burners are completely off all the time. A lack of fire doesn't mean no gas. If you still smell gas hours after assuring that all the burners are off, call your local fire department for an inspection. They should be happy to help at any time of the day or night. PLEASE- get everyone OUT, and call the gas company from a safe distance away from the house.

DO NOT turn on any electrical outlets or do anything that could cause a spark. Just GET OUT!

Gas leaks are dangerous, and while you may have ventilated the room, you could have a leak inside the cabinet or elsewhere, and there still could be a gas buildup. It's important to get everyone out quickly, and call someone who knows how to fix it.

My grandma used to have a really old 1930"s Westinghouse gas stove. I found as I looked at it that the stove top gas burner valves needed new wax rope seals installed in the stove top gas valve manifold, very expensive to replace on that old antique stove. Lift the stove top as if you are going to clean under the burners and smell by the loose burner valves. You know, the valves that need zero effort to twist them.

Old antique stoves can be impossible to get parts for. If the valve shafts leak, it's time for a new gas range.
Once you prop the stove top, hit the valves with some soapy water to confirm absolutely you got the leak.

It wouldn't hurt to have someone check for leaks, but a slight odor when you stick your face in the burner is actually normal.
