U=Q+W. it follows that dU=d(Q+W)=dQ+dW, and you can define q and w as equivalent to dQ and dW, and assign a sign convention where the relationship could be expressed as dU=q-w or dU=q+w, but not both at the same time. One or the other depending on how you decide to think about work and heat.
